Centovigne Castello di Castellengo

Castellengo Castle, located in the Biellese Pre-Alps below Monte Rosa, has for centuries been home to the production of delicious wines born in the surrounding vineyards on ancient soils of glacial origin, where Nebbiolo and Erbaluce are traditionally grown.

Magda and Alessandro Ciccioni reinterpret this tradition daily through the almost archaeological restoration of the ancient vineyards. They reconstruct the historic estate now called Centovigne as it consists of small vineyards scattered on the hills between Castello di Castellengo and Montalciata, in Alto Piemonte.

In the 18th-century cellars, cement tanks and large oak barrels are used to age the wines, combining new knowledge and tradition in a marriage of technology and history.

History dates back to 1682, the year the document was drafted that stated how many wine presses, how many barrels and how many vats were in the Castellengo vineyards.

On Sept. 28, 1748, the Cabreo was drawn up, a judicial report on the feudal properties of Castellengo, establishing the size of the vineyards and the cultivation systems used. Then, in 1888, the summary of the Sella estate in Castellengo appears with the income and expenses related to the sale of Castellengo.

The total area of vineyards scattered here and there is 8.5 hectares but each vineyard also includes a forest. So they also have 30 hectares of forests. These are perfect for securing harmony in nature. With five wines, 40,000 bottles are produced.

This particularly good wine region belongs to Coste della Sesia, the lesser-known denomination compared to Ghemme DOCG and Gattinara DOCG. Coste della Sesia 1996.

Much of the winery in terms of exports goes to US. At the foot of the slope, to get to the winery, is Osteria della Villa where all the wines of this winery are offered at very interesting price with lunch or dinner.

In terms of white wine, there is the Erbaluce with name Miranda. Alessandro tells in his video that this wine is named after his sister-in-law (who doesn't actually know this) because of its juiciness and acidity. Also special is the minerality.

What's special: there is no temperature controlled fermentation and after fermentation the wine just goes outside in stainless steel vats. After six months, it is bottled.

In terms of rosé, there is Il Rosa, based on the Nebbiolo grape. This makes this wine very different from the classic French rosé wine.

The entry-level Nebbiolo is Rosso della Motta. This wine in its offered price is a topper.

With the Centovigne we have a variant that has 85% Nebbiolo and 15% Vespolina, which is allowed through the disciplinaria (code of law on the composition of wine).

The top product that can stand any comparison with Barolo and even in a blind tasting with the better Barolos is Castellengo. This wine consists of the full 100% of Nebbiolo.

We are proud to have this winery Centovigne in our range for these very interesting prices.
