The most important changes in the appelations of Piedmont in april on the occasion of the results of last harvest

The most important changes in the appelations of Piedmont in april on the occasion of the results of last harvest
April is the month of debut for young wines, the fruit of the 2020 harvest. The locals expect an excellent vintage, but the market is light and shady.
There is a lack of tourists at the winery and restaurants are still closed. "They're going to do better exports, big retailers and online sales - said Diego Furia, director of Coldiretti Asti, - . We sincerely hope that the new vintage will be appreciated in the markets, especially domestic ones, also because it contains important novelties, fruit of the initiative of our winemakers."
One of the main reasons for the renewed interest is the debut this year of the newly established Terre Alfieri DOCG, the appellation north of the Tanaro in the Ruhr region that in just ten years has become one of the elite of provincial viticulture.
Also at this time, after the revision of the production regulations of the Piedmont DOC, the so-called bivarietal wines are making their debut, albeit still a bit quietly. For the red wines, it will still take a few months, but as for the white wines, Piedmont DOC wines will appear on the market with the specification of two grape varieties among them: Cortese, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Bussanello, Favorita, Moscato, Pinot bianco, Pinot grigio, Riesling, Riesling italico, Riesling renano, Viognier and Pinot Nero vinified in white.
"While waiting for the debut of the red bivarietal wines, planned for the summer, - says Marco Reggio, president of Coldiretti Asti -, such as the intriguing "Piemonte Doc Barbera Nebbiolo", this novelty could prove important for the economy of our province in the long run."
Among the first wines of the year are also rosé wines, of which the two Asti DOCs are "Monferrato Chiaretto" and "Piemonte Rosato." "This too is a wealth - notes Furia - that few wine-growing regions can say they possess. As well as the arrival on the market of the first labels with the designation "Piemonte Moscato tipologia secco" and "Piemonte Brachetto tipologia secco."
If these are the important novelties of this new vintage, there are also the usual "firsts" of the wines that the winemakers intentionally let re-ferment in the bottle. These wines are lively, very sparkling, ready to drink, to be enjoyed during the meal. Regarding these reds, the Asti area has an important tradition and includes historic Doc wines such as the classic Freisa d'Asti or Barbera del Monferrato, but also several vines that are part of the Doc Piemonte and Monferrato; for example Bonarda, as well as Dolcetto d'Asti and Grignolino d'Asti.
