Interest for Asti and Monferrato's wine is growing seriously
It was a poor, but high quality harvest for all 12 names (10 Doc, 2 Docg and Nizza Docg awaiting recognition) protected and promoted by the Consortium and representing 73.4% of the area planted with vines. of origin in the province of Asti.
The number of Docs that have joined the Consortium is growing. In 2017 Grignolino d'Asti, Loazzolo and Terre Alfieri also arrived (1,331,240 bottles produced). The collected data show that in 2017, 2,287,193 bottles were produced from the cellars in more than 12 protected denominations (+ 3.6%), compared to a decline in total production in harvest (-17.2%).
In 2017 the number of bottles of Barbera d'Asti grew by 6.3%, reaching 158.506,75 hectoliters (1,261,764 bottles more than in 2016, when the hectoliters recorded were 149,043,52, corresponding to 19,872. 469 bottles). The bottling cellars are 530, of which 360 in the Asti area. Sales reach Italy and abroad, directed above all towards Great Britain, Scandinavian countries and Germany (60%). 30% go to America (with prevalence of Canada and the United States), 9% to Asia and 5% to Russia.
Among the best performances recorded in 2017 of the various types of Barbera d'Asti, there is the Barbera d'Asti DOCG Superiore (+ 16%), of the Nice typology (+ 17.2%) with a production of 369.861 bottles ( were 315.472 in 2016) and Piedmont Barbera (+ 5%; 20.259.944 bottles produced). Another DOCG that is going well is the Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato: 834,757 bottles (6,260.68 hectoliters), which register a + 7.6% compared to 2016.
Sign less for the Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco (-32.7%, which corresponds to 132.233 bottles), which is affected by the lack of appeal of sweet wines. Also minus sign for the Cortese dell'Alto Monferrato doc (-21%, which corresponds to a decrease of 232.948 bottles).
In 2017, the total bottling of the denominations protected by the Consortium was 499.404,30 hectoliters (66.587.240 bottles compared to 0.75 liters), while the production of the last harvest referring to the protected productions stood at 492.895 hectoliters.
