The pearl of Roero: Antica Cascina dei Conti di Roero 

Whereas in Piedmont the midday sun peaks to 21 degrees, in Belgium there is an autumn scenario with, as usual, more rain, and less sun. This week the last grapes, the Nebbiolo, were harvested.  Nebbia, the fog, hangs over the vineyards and the picture is magical. Some didn't wait for the rains of last Tuesday and started in advance.

Since June we have already partially put this winery - Antica Cascina dei Conti di Roero - in the spotlight. The winery Antica Cascina dei Conti di Roero started its magnificent wine production in the early fifties, when the Olivero family, Daniela's father and mother, bought the Valmenera farm in Vezza d'Alba.

The land and vineyards in the Cerruti region, better known as Sru, were merged, in the municipalities of Canale and Monteu Roero, now the heart of UNESCO heritage. In the beginning it was a typical mixed farm with orchards, vineyards and grain fields. The turning point came in the early 70's when the family decided to concentrate solely on viticulture.

We, Daniela and Luigi, ...spoke

We joined the company in the '90s, just married. We grew up between rows, hills and people of the Roero. Our idea of viticulture can be explained in one word: authenticity. A concept we apply in the vineyard, in the cellar, in life. We have chosen to believe and work only with indigenous vines: Nebbiolo, Arneis, Favorita and Barbera.

We have 13.5 hectares of vineyards, all owned, in an area recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site for the beauty of the wine landscape. Our first investment, in 1998, was the purchase of Cascina Penna on the territory of Canale. Over the years we have continued to invest and grow. Today, we produce around one hundred thousand bottles.

We cultivate and respect our vineyards: from the harvest of 2016 we participate in the Coldiretti Cuneo project "The green experience", a certification for those who choose to make a sustainable viticulture with green fertilization, sowing flowers and legumes in autumn.

ROERO ARNEIS DOCG VEZZA D'ALBA - Decanter 89 points 

This is the native white vine that best expresses the terroir of the Roero. The grapes grow in sandy soil, an ancient memory of the sea floor and still rich in fossil shells. This richness is expressed in an intense minerality. The pure Arneis lends itself well to several years of ripening: its ripeness gives it a more refined and aristocratic character.

Nebbiolo d'Alba is grown in the vineyards of Cascina Valmenera, the heart of our company. They call it "our staircase to heaven", as Led Zeppelin sang, because the rows are arranged in an amphitheatre that seems to rise to heaven. They have a southwest exposure. They're planned for the late '90s. Here, in the sand lakes of what was once a seabed, the Nebbiolo fully expresses his elegance and power.
