The name Grignolino is derived from the Piedmontese dialectic term grignolo which means pit.
Grignolino produces grapes abundant in pips, and thus tannins. However, the name gives no indication of the acidity of the grapes. The high tannin and acidity level may of course indicate that Grignolino could stand alongside Piedmont's two most successful red varieties, Nebbiolo and Barbera, whose tannin and acid structure is a key element in their success.
Grignolino wines are becoming increasingly popular, there are two DOC titles dedicated to the grape: Grignolino d'Asti and Grignolino del Monferrato. The first covers wines from the east of the province of Asti, around the city of Asti itself, while the second covers the western half of the neighbouring province of Alessandria. Both were created in the early 1970s, a time when the Piedmont wine administration was very proactive and very ambitious.
Piedmontese winemakers organised events in which the potential of maturing Grignolino was made clear. Whoever came to our tasting and tried a young Grignolino compared to this most fine and elegant Uccelletta from Vicara, was quite surprised by this very big difference.
Karina Imschoot, who is in charge of this webshop Made In Piedmont Wines, tasted Grignolino of 15 years old in both events, AIS and ONAV namely the institutes in charge of wine education for sommeliers.
She came to the conclusion that what is said about Grignolino being a young wine to be drunk only in its younger years is not really 100% correct.
Try the Vicara, Uccelletta and you will be surprised about the power of this Grignolino grape and its potential to develop in your cellar during 7 to 10 years.
